Dementia Action Week 21-27 May

Dementia Action Week is here, this week everyone is asked to take actions both big and small in order to improve the lives of those affected by dementia.

In the UK, one person develops dementia every three minutes. Yet too many people living with dementia face the condition alone and excluded from society.  In Surrey it is estimated that Dementia currently affects 1 in 12 older people (over 65) and this number is expected to increase by 25% by 2020. In addition some people develop Dementia at an earlier age. This is why we all need to play our part in helping those living with dementia to live well for longer. It’s the small things that count. Surrey Heartlands Partnership and East Surrey Dementia Strategy - Earlier this year local NHS partners with Surrey County Council launched a new Dementia Strategy which can be viewed or downloaded here, this was developed , with local stakeholders and citizens for people living with dementia and their carers in our area. This collaborative approach is what our citizens expect of us, and will be continued and built on as the strategy is implemented

Giving People a Voice (That’s all of us, by the way).

We are now starting work on implementing our dementia strategy.

This work builds on our approach to writing the strategy through developing ideas and plans by talking with and listening to people with dementia and those who care for them.

This is a privilege and so where are we starting?

We have decided to start listening to people who have a learning disability as well as dementia and their carers.  To do this we are collaborating with the Surrey County Council team that has developed a co-production model.

We are holding our first work shop in June so watch this space!  We hope to give our communities a powerful voice to engage with us.
